A Retrospective on Commander Legends Battle for Baldur's Gate Prerelease

“We should do draft more often!”
– the most commonly spoken phrase of the night.

Magic the Gathering’s newest set release ‘Commander Legends Battle for Baldur’s Gate’ had a lot to offer:

  • Returning mechanics from ‘Adventures in the Forgotten Realms’ including dice rolling and dungeons
  • A new partner like mechanic with the introductions to ‘Background’ enchantments
  • A new designation (similar to the ‘Monarch’ from previous sets) with ‘The Initiative’
  • The return of mechanics with Adventure, Goad and Myriad
  • A load of new Legendary Creatures for Commanders

There was still a twist to this set that stole the show and got everyone more excited to crack their packs. Battle for Baldur’s Gate was not your typical limited sealed prerelease, instead, it focused on participants drafting their prerelease kits with each other.
For many patrons at EPIC Ipswich, this was their first time ever experiencing a draft and the feedback was incredible!

Players pulled their packs, opened them, drew two cards and passed their packs along to each other. Drawing two cards each time and planning a 61-card Commander Deck with the various cards they pulled.

As someone who witnessed the madness, let me start by telling you that this lengthy two-round night was full of politics, ploys and player fun. The draft forced an interesting and unique spin on your typical commander games and is something I believe we could use more of in the Magic the Gathering community.

As for introducing players to the Draft format, I will risk the wrath of the benevolent and almighty owners and offer a behind-the-scenes insight…. WATCH THIS SPACE.

Exciting things are on the horizon for Magic at EPIC Ipswich.

As for the Commander Legends Battle for Baldur’s Gate release, I look forward (and dread) facing off against a lot of the new cards released in this set at my regular Commander games. For those wanting to play more Commander, EPIC Ipswich runs Commander on Tuesdays and Fridays, with Magic purchases on Friday entering you into our Friday Night Magic Raffle.

Until the next release, enjoy the many fun mechanics and cards of this set.

Your Friend and Ally,

Lachy

The website got a facelift

It has been busy busy busy behind the scenes here at EPIC Ipswich over the past fortnight. Prep work for the Benevolent Owners shared vacation, juggling the change in the store's layout, new til systems, new television menus, and becoming increasingly popular. This isn't even factoring in the change in menu, or the upcoming events planned. We have been busy and you can trust I'll give you, loyal readers, a store update once we get time. In the meantime, our website has been updated by yours truly. When I first did the original website home page I had the essential elements, with a lot of my working hours, I've been making the website more streamlined and more friendly to our bandwidth. Please note, that the game pages are still to be updated to provide you more information about what we do here. In the mean time, anticipate big things on the horizon. I saw some streaming gear in the offices.... I suspect it will have something to do with videos on the social media end....

Team Cupcake and Why they run Bingo

Bingo has been a staple at EPIC Ipswich since it first opened, originally running 6 Games a week (3 in the morning and 3 at night during weeknights), now it sees over 100 people weekly for our Friday night Bingo and our end-of-month Speed Bingo, a late session after the normal Bingo held on the last Friday of each month. To the surprise of many, EPIC Ipswich merely provides the staff and venue for BINGO, it's actually organised by Shell's Team Cupcake, a not-for-profit organisation. But what is Team Cupcake and what is their mission? How did Team Cupcake come about? Team Cupcake Inc started out with a couple of friends and some family raising money to pay for a beloved friend's secondary cancer treatment. Along their journey, we discovered that there were many other people in Ipswich that need a little helping hand and sometimes just needed to know that someone was thinking of them and cared. And so Team Cupcake became incorporated so that they could help to ease the burden...

Phyrexia All Will Be One - A summary of Mechanics and Archetypes

Once again I find myself in the position of watching everyone else have fun at Prerelease for the new set and this time I cannot put into words how disappointed I am to be unable to partake. Everyone who plays against me in MTG jokes that I'm "a Phyrexian Simp". To help you wrap your head around it and help with deck building for prerelease I have compiled the Mechanics and Archetypes into a single blog post you may scroll through to help. Mechanics Toxic Toxic is the new infect- applying Poison counters to an opponent when a creature with Toxic deals combat damage. The damage applied to an opponent’s life total is reduced with the combat damage and the number of Poison counters applied is determined by the number next to Toxic in that creature’s text box. Corrupted Corrupted is a new MTG mechanic in Phyrexia All Will Be One that adds value to Poison counters. Upon an opponent having 10 Poison counters, the game is ended. The Corrupted mechanic allows permanents to have...
