What is Adventurers League?

Adventurers League is a standardised and regulated form of Dungeons & Dragons . It uses the rules as written in the official D&D books, so you don't need to worry about any homebrew rules. Character creation is limited to the Players Handbook and one other source, which means you don't have to worry about anyone making characters that are too game-breaking, as well as all the possible worlds you can end up in are all published D&D settings  To put it simply, Adventurers League takes all of the guesswork out of D&D. The stories are already written, the rules are plainly outlined, and everything is structured. So it is a great place to learn as a player and even as a Game Master  Each session is a short self-contained 2-4 hour story, though some will make callbacks to other stories you won't miss much if you can only come in once a fortnight instead of every week, unlike other games where it always feels like when you miss one session you end up missing ...

Our newest fan club

Summer is coming and whilst we are working on getting the air conditioners repaired in the orange and green zone, we have a temporary solution in preparation for some of the upcoming hot days that Summer may bring. If you're wondering why this was necessary to write a blog post about. It is definitely NOT because I bought myself a bunch of fans to make a joke about having my own fan club. The Benevolent Owners purchased the fans from someone (WHO ISNT ME) due to the heat and not because they felt pity because an employee who lives in a carboard box in EPIC Ipswich's storage may have been crying for a full month - I didn't even stop crying to sleep..... Anyway are you a FAN of these changes? If not don't tell me or hurt my feelings. If you are please tell me to validate my feelings. If you are a literal fan, please tell me how you are reading this blog and if our electronic devices are planning to conquer humanity on behalf of our robot overlords.... I should probably ...

Pokémon Games starting!

Wanna be the very best like no one ever was? It has been a slow-growing process however, EPIC Ipswich is finally opening our doors to the Pokemon Trading Card Game. This will be a fun social group that is all-inclusive and child friendly. The hope for this social group is for new players to learn how to play the game with their collected cards and finally get to experience a game that is predominantly online in Australia. EPIC Ipswich will not be running the games or any tournaments we organise as sanctioned events and therefore there will be no prize support for the immediate future. The Pokemon Company have limited sanctioned games and tournaments to Japan only- however hope is not lost. EPIC Ipswich is stocked with all the newest releases, binders, playmats, decks and folders to help assist Trainers with their deck-building and card maintenance needs. Games will run from 12 PM every Saturday at EPIC Ipswich and there is no cost to come in and start playing! Your Friend and All...

Call of Cthulhu paused

If you've read any of the previous blogs on here pertaining to Call of Cthulhu, you won't be surprised to learn I am a massive fan of the RPG. At points in time I, myself, had even been a Keeper of Arcane Lore when the game started running the first time at EPIC Ipswich.  Unfortunately, we have had to pause the Call of Cthulhu games for the past four weeks due to the Game Master (GM) availability, I am also unavailable to GM myself due to the time it takes to prepare for running the game. This is not goodbye forever, we have many enthusiastic players wanting to continue playing and should we find the next month I will take some time to make preparations to continue the games as a Keeper myself. May the insanity continue, Lachy

EPIC featured on ZED GAMES podcast

Just when we thought Springcon would be the gift that has finally stopped giving (until next year), there was a surprise for us all on Saturday when our staff discovered that a local gaming podcast took an extraordinary amount of time from their podcast to sing praises about EPIC Ipswich. Most of the conversation that is detailed on their most recent trip to Springcon '22 was focused on telling their listeners about our store. The Benevolent Owners were so excited they even decreed that whichever staff member writes the blog should give them a shout-out to thank them for the plug. I just so happen to be that said staff member, and normally when I am so instructed it's accompanied by a sense of fear - this time I'm actually excited, these guys earned it. You may listen to the podcast here and if you ever get the opportunity, tell them EPIC Ipswich says thank you.  Your Friend and Ally, Lachy

Season 2 of the The EPIC Battle League

Just under a week since the final of Season 1, and as excited as we are, next season will start in 2023. We have received a lot of feedback and can promise you we are not taking any of it lightly. We have heard and look forward to implementing some of the following changes for next season: NOTE - These are ideas and we cannot promise that all these changes will come into effect Changes to Thursday Night Once our new member cards (you read that right) come in, we can allow people a 10% discount off all magic products. This is due to the $17 Modern Horizon II boosters going out of stock, whilst we give one away with the $15 entry, this business model is not going to last long and needs to change. By allowing 10% off, it equates to around the same discount our players are already receiving. Prizes will also change on Thursday. We want to reward the hard work of players, however we don't want people to feel the need to play for sheep stations and be discouraged from not getting to th...

EPIC Crafty Creative Day

Despite the age of this blog, I have still not written a blog for every event we hold, EPIC Crafty Creative Day is perhaps the most prominent one I've missed.  What is EPIC Crafty Creative Day? EPIC Crafty Creative Day started off as a concept way back when EPIC first opened, the premise was to combine Trish's Crafty Studio and EPIC on one day a month, where creative parents could craft whilst their kids could craft on minecraft (yes that was way back when we ran a minecraft server in store). Over time it transitioned into miniature painting for games like Warhammer, D&D and such using the paint supplies from crafty whilst the crafty studio adopted a crop day structure. Both retail and space for EPIC Ipswich and The Crafty Studio will remain open all day as per usual. The price? The price? oh riiiight, the price! Yes that'd either be your mortal soul or ownership of your first born child..... KIDDING! It's free with exception to hiring supplies and purchasing a mini...

Springcon 2022

EPIC Ipswich was at Springcon this weekend! What is Springcon you ask? To oversimplify it, a bunch of gamers from Springfield got together one year, called it a convention and decided they'd host it in a school. After a lot of set up on our end - taking brochures, vouchers, stock, games, and some of our best staff and patrons to represent us. Saturday was a day filled with tables of community and competition. Star Wars Legion, Warhammer and your general games were played en mass. A lengthy day (9 AM - 5 PM) with the Springfield Gamers QLD and Beyond Blue representing our local gaming community. A massive thanks to Quentin, Bron and Gottie for assisting and representing EPIC Ipswich last weekend! Your Friend and Ally, Lachy

Changes to store layout

It seems like a monthly tradition at this point - the store layout has once again changed for the better. The gaming wall is now one of the first things to greet customers when they enter EPIC for the first time.  Why the change? The Benevolent Owners agreed has enabled more efficient use of floor space and eye level. With board games, role play games and trading card games being the core part of the community we structured the business around - having the store's copies of games ready and available to play in a more accessible location further helps drive that point home. Plus it looks pretty neat too..... Your Friend and Ally Lachy

Changes to EPIC League

If you're an active participant in our EPIC League on a Wednesday and were present at yesterday's game would've heard from the League's GM Daniel that after the current story arch, there will be some major changes to the league and it's structure as all the DM's have noticed and felt the slow decline in the leagues structure.  The DMs spend alot of nights planning and preparing for the league but with the actions of one table derailing other tables, different DM styles, different ideas on the availability one magic items, the disconnect in interpretation, communication breakdowns and the handicapped freedom that DMs get to have in the league - the burnout is real. To offer a transparent view behind our screens most of the DMs are tired and don't find joy in running on a Wednesday night anymore, the thing that keeps us going is the players and the enjoyment that get with every session. In saying this this isn't the first changes we've had with the l...

TikTok on the Clock

TIKTOK on the clock but the party don't stop no ow-a-ow-a-ow-ow For those who follow the blog, you'll recall I may have mentioned that when the benevolent owners of EPIC Ipswich returned from their business trip, they were very changed people.... their eyes had shifted colour and they seemed to have renewed youth, resembling dashing figures in their late 20s - Needless to say I need their skincare routine but that's not what today's blog post is about. If you would like to read that article click here , however, if you would not like to read that article, you flatter me with your determination to read the words I am carefully typing as they look over my shoulder with terrifying smiles, full of joy, viscous fluids and sharpened teeth. No, today's article is to entertain you, today's article is about community and making 'fun' EPIC Ipswich's business. We now have TikTok Ladies and Gentlemen. Whilst it's early days, the benevolent owners were most...

The Lost adventures of Fblthp

You've heard of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, now make some noise for The Fresh Prince of Bell Street. The Benevolent Owners of EPIC Ipswich have been blown away by the love of our Lost-Friend Fblthp, we've even had people make fan art specifically for him (see the background of this blogs featured image). Well now, as part of this Blog, we are making a section dedicated to his adventures around our local community.  Expect to see him doing crazy shenanigans including beach trips and his run in with rival Plushie - Nicol Bolas.  To aid in our Fblthp-ing fantastic fanbase of locals - We even have a new facebook Page dedicated to linking everyone to upcoming blogposts, TikToks and facebook posts. The benevolent owners have even asked if Fblthp can accompany some of our most loyal and dedicated patrons on an adventure or two. Like and follow it now to stay up to date for fan-fblthping-tastic time (still working on it :P) https://www.facebook.com/FoundFblthp Your Friend and Ally, L...

Jene's MTG - Buy, Swap, Sell

Local trader of (the not so) illicit cardboard crack - Jene Johnston is here to do (not so) shady deals in the corner of EPIC Ipswich on September 23rd! Not just that - Every commander player on the night and everyone who purchases from his store go in a raffle to win a FOIL JEWELED LOTUS! A bit about Jene's MTG, Jene is a MTG Card vendor that specialises in competitive rates to get the cards local Magic Players need for the cheapest price around. As someone who has done business with him many a time before, both in person and online, he is the most modest and honest gentlemen you will ever meet. He has vended in EPIC Ipswich for Aus Magic Leagues finals and is based up in Toowoomba. Supporting as many local events as humanly possible! How Jene Buys: Card will be bought at a price of around 70% TCG Player for cash or 80% for Store Credit. This will vary for card like reserved list, card condition and general cost factors. SAVE THE DATE and we will look forward to seeing Jene on ...

The ANZ Super Series - Our store Qualifier!

Normally closed on Sundays, on the 11th of September EPIC Ipswich had other plans. After rescheduling our originally planned ANZ Super Series on Thursday the 25th of August, we finally saw the day come around. Magic players arrived early to gloss over the cabinet of singles, pay for entry, register and receive their promos. After a long day of play (originally starting at 11 AM and finishing late afternoon) the top 8 were announced for the Quarter Finals, all of which won a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx alt art Promo card. Congratulations to our Top 8 Torin Kelderman Stephen Klease Matthew Macinante Heath Manning Taylor McCormick Thomas Barker Andrew Virgona Carl Frankel Semi-Finals saw Stephen Klease battle against the triumphant Torin Kelderman. A huge congratulations to Torin Kelderman who ventured all the way from Toowoomba to represent our local MTG community at the finals down in Sydney later this year. In addition to a ticket into the Final Torin also received $300 ($100 of which cove...

Fortnightly Kids D&D

EPIC Ipswich has reliably been running Dungeons and Dragons since our store opened, even branching out to make a kid-friendly event to train up the next generation of D&D Players. Dungeons and Wyrmlings (or as it is often referred to Kids D&D) made waves with kids creating unique characters of their own and taking them week in and week out to venture into different territories, levelling them up as they had done so. With the increased demand for the Dungeon Masters to run the games, bookings became inevitable, and even then the booking system has failed as parents no longer call the store to let us know when their child is next attending. Rant Incoming - feel free to skip to the next heading Speaking as a DM myself, the sheer frustration of not knowing which kids will be able to attend the game and then making up a one-shot on the fly as everyone is at a different level and experience became stressful. What's worse is the days I showed up expecting to run and found out my...

New TV Screens

Y'all ever heard of McDonald's? Maccas? Yeah the fast food chain. One man pretty much saw what they had done with their menu screens and asked himself "How can we make this better?". That was the point the cashier demanded Trevor pay for his McNuggets cause his daydreaming was holding up the queue. At least that's how that panned out in my head. Cut ahead to today and EPIC Ipswich has TV screens of the same quality around our Retail, Cafe and Greenzone in EPIC.  The screen in the cafe cycles through the different menu options we have available. The screen in the Green zone showcases the events we have on in our store throughout the week and as for the screen in the retail spot - it sits there and looks pretty whilst customers browse and occasionally look up at it, often thinking aloud "Oh hey, yeah, I'm in EPIC" before continuing to buy craft supplies or their newest set of pretty click-clacks (Gamer term for dice). So yay! New TV's. That's...

THEY ARE BACK!

THIS IS NOT A DRILL! THEY ARE BACK! Ladies, gentlemen, guys, gals and my non-binary pals. The benevolent and almighty owners of EPIC Ipswich have returned.  For those who hadn't visited the premises since last Wednesday, Trevor the Founding Father and Trish the Queen of Crafts, left EPIC Ipswich in the very reliable and most capable hands of their staff whilst they were out plotting... erm... I mean planning changes to the business in a conference down in Sydney. After the store nearly burnt down from a fryer being left on over the weekend and its panicked cover-up. The Benevolent and most gracious power couple of the store touched down Monday morning to say and I quote "Yup. That's a mighty fine store we have. Were the garbage bins emptied? Did someone eat my truffle? Did someone forget to feed the work experience people we have locked away in our office?". After finding all the staff members answers acceptable, they finally let me out of the cardboard box they'...

The website got a facelift

It has been busy busy busy behind the scenes here at EPIC Ipswich over the past fortnight. Prep work for the Benevolent Owners shared vacation, juggling the change in the store's layout, new til systems, new television menus, and becoming increasingly popular. This isn't even factoring in the change in menu, or the upcoming events planned. We have been busy and you can trust I'll give you, loyal readers, a store update once we get time. In the meantime, our website has been updated by yours truly. When I first did the original website home page I had the essential elements, with a lot of my working hours, I've been making the website more streamlined and more friendly to our bandwidth. Please note, that the game pages are still to be updated to provide you more information about what we do here. In the mean time, anticipate big things on the horizon. I saw some streaming gear in the offices.... I suspect it will have something to do with videos on the social media end....
