Announcing the EPIC Battle League

Modern Players, you spoke and we listened. EPIC Ipswich is starting up its own community-run league!

What’s wrong with your current league?

We don’t run a league, however, if you’re asking about the Aus Magic League, there’s nothing wrong with it. EPIC still fully intends to keep participating in the Aus Magic League and support it in every way.

“Why then are you creating a new league?”, you may ask. The short answer is that many in our community just miss that competitive edge the last season of the Aus Magic League had, back when it was called the Modern Masters League. By EPIC having their own league, there isn’t the stress of ensuring the needs of other stores are being accounted for meaning that EPIC can run the league cost-neutral to help give back to our community as our way of saying thank you. It also means our community of local players can help us design the league to their wants.

How will the league function?

The EPIC Battle League will have a 3-month season (12-week season). Points will be scored as per the original masters format so for each win of the night you will get 1 point. So you can get a maximum of 8 points a night you play. There won’t be extra points for going 4-0 at the moment. If it changes the scores will be amended.

At the end of the 12 weeks, there will be 2 ways players can win Cash Prizes.

The first way is to place in the Top 8 in the league by the end of week 11. On week 12, the Top 8 will play against each other. The prizes will be as follows:

1st place will win $200, 2nd place will win $100, 3rd place will win $75, 4th place will win $50 and 5th to 8th place will each win $25.

To answer some questions I am already anticipating, week 12 will have normal modern on that week and as it currently stands, we are still hashing out the details but we are anticipating there will be a benefit to placing 1st in the Top 8 for the Thursday.

The second way players can win some money is at the End of Season Saturday. The season end will be the Saturday of week 12 and will cost $30 to enter, however, every player will win back $30 or MORE! Think of it as a free day out.

The End of Season Saturday will reset the season points as the Top 8 already won money on Thursday. Will the Top 8 receive an advantage on Saturday? At this stage no, however, this is not set in stone and will depend on thoughts from the community as the weeks progress. Regardless of where you place, players will all win cash, once again, how much depends on where you place.

1st place will win $500, 2nd place  $250, 3rd place $150, 4th place, $100, 5th to 8th place will each win $75. Everyone else will get $30.

To qualify for the End of Season Saturday, players must have attended 75% of games over the season, meaning players can miss one Thursday a month and still be able to participate.

Will there be other prizes?

At this stage no, however never say never, there are rumours circulating about awards for Most Improved Player and Most Unique Deck, at this stage EPIC won’t be providing these awards.

How will this work with Aus Magic League?

Simply play on Thursdays, we will be recording points for both!

Is there a weekly cost to play?

Yes, we require your soul. KIDDING! We don’t actually want your soul, who knows where that has been.

There is a $15 cost to play. Players will receive a FREE booster pack on the night. What pack will it be? It will either be a set or a draft booster. This is also dependent on the number of players and stock availability.

Key Dates

The first season of the EPIC Battle League has already begun, as was announced last week to our Modern Community.

Season 1 will run from Thursday the 21st of July through to the 8th of October.

Top 8 Playoff is on Thursday the 6th of October.

End of Season Saturday is the 8th of October.

At this stage the next season will commence the following Thursday (the 14th of October).

AND THAT’S IT! Get deck building, shuffle up and play at EPIC on Thursdays.

Your Friend and Ally,

Larry

The website got a facelift

It has been busy busy busy behind the scenes here at EPIC Ipswich over the past fortnight. Prep work for the Benevolent Owners shared vacation, juggling the change in the store's layout, new til systems, new television menus, and becoming increasingly popular. This isn't even factoring in the change in menu, or the upcoming events planned. We have been busy and you can trust I'll give you, loyal readers, a store update once we get time. In the meantime, our website has been updated by yours truly. When I first did the original website home page I had the essential elements, with a lot of my working hours, I've been making the website more streamlined and more friendly to our bandwidth. Please note, that the game pages are still to be updated to provide you more information about what we do here. In the mean time, anticipate big things on the horizon. I saw some streaming gear in the offices.... I suspect it will have something to do with videos on the social media end....

Team Cupcake and Why they run Bingo

Bingo has been a staple at EPIC Ipswich since it first opened, originally running 6 Games a week (3 in the morning and 3 at night during weeknights), now it sees over 100 people weekly for our Friday night Bingo and our end-of-month Speed Bingo, a late session after the normal Bingo held on the last Friday of each month. To the surprise of many, EPIC Ipswich merely provides the staff and venue for BINGO, it's actually organised by Shell's Team Cupcake, a not-for-profit organisation. But what is Team Cupcake and what is their mission? How did Team Cupcake come about? Team Cupcake Inc started out with a couple of friends and some family raising money to pay for a beloved friend's secondary cancer treatment. Along their journey, we discovered that there were many other people in Ipswich that need a little helping hand and sometimes just needed to know that someone was thinking of them and cared. And so Team Cupcake became incorporated so that they could help to ease the burden...

The Adventures of a D&D Penguin - a Kids D&D Game

Say what you like about the mind of a child, there is no denying the imagination we had as kids vastly changes as we all come into adulthood. For me it’s something I feel is a loss – I could spend hours in the backyard of my childhood home, swinging sticks like they were swords, lightsabers, magic wands or a wizard’s staff. Nowadays I spend time imagining social interactions in my head, playing out a scenario in my head on drives between places or as I make my morning coffee, comparably less cool than being a freaking wizard! The fact I still can recall a lot of those games of make-believe around my junior school playground speaks volumes about the impact imagination has on a developing brain. This is one of the reasons I am constantly dumbfounded when I DM (Dungeon Master) a game of  Dungeons and Dragons for kids and they do something truly amazing that ruminates in my mind and happily lives there rent-free weeks after it’s. This, dear reader, is the story of how my  Dungeon...
