Dominaria United - 30 Years of MTG

It seems like the Magic the Gathering (MTG) community haven't finished processing the craziness that was Double Masters 2022, yet already within the past couple of weeks, they unveiled a lot of new information about the upcoming set that returns us to the plane of Magic's origin - Dominaria. Join me in this two-part blog post covering the first 30 years of magic and speculating the story accompanying the set release.

ABOUT THE SET

30 Years of Magic the Gathering

MTG has been around for nearly 30 years, their 30th anniversary will be a year-long and starts with Dominaria United. When players register for prerelease before the event, they will receive one of three 30th anniversary promos. These promos are cards from magics' earliest printings that aren't on the reserved list. Expect more promos like these to come in the future months.

Lost Legends

Cards from the reserved list are returning to boosters. If you're hearing alarm bells ring you're not alone, there is a lot of controversy surrounding this online at the moment. Bare in mind that Wizards of the Coast (WotC) have claimed these aren't reprints and they found a massive collection of sealed 'Legends' booster boxes at an old warehouse they shut down and then decided to open the boosters to put the Legend cards in collector boosters for Dominaria United.

Not every card from Legends was found in these boosters and not every collector booster will have one inside. That and WotC don't want to be affiliated with certain artists anymore and don't wish to taint their image with some of the more culturally offensive flavour text from some of the older cards, they recently came under fire for racism in D&D and I don't believe they'd risk a repeat offence.

If you have your heart set on pulling a Legends card from a collector booster, they will be extremely hard to find as they're only in 3% of collector boosters.

Jumpstart

We all saw with recent sets, the less-than-impressive Theme boosters, in all future sets Theme boosters will now be replaced by the fan favourite Jumpstart Boosters. Each set will provide players with the choice of sealed prerelease or jumpstart prereleases.

What are Jumpstart Boosters? 20 card packs that are themed uniquely to each set. Dominaria United has 10 confirmed differently-themed packs. To play Jumpstart all you need is two packs to open and shuffle together with a couple of basic lands. The concept is quick and simple and provides a quick and easy learning experience for new players.

With each booster themed, it's easy to see why Theme boosters were replaced with Jumpstart.

Are you excited for these product changes and the 30th anniversary of Magic the Gathering. I for one can't wait to see what shenanigans WotC have planned for us in the upcoming storyline, more on that in tomorrows post.
Your Friend and Ally,
Lachy

Fblthp has a new hospitality job?

The Lost Adventures of Fblthp - entry 3 See previous entry here Fblthp has a new hospitality job? Lisa Cooke had finished her training and rushed off to her work at the local Hotel, she had only arrived when she went to grab her ID from her bag when she found a stowaway in her bag! Fblthp was busted, here is a photo Lisa sent me to report the out-of-control plushie. Now remember, I had thought Fblthp dead after I last saw him being carried away by a pelican, so to say I was surprised that he had gotten so incredibly lost and moreover harassing EPIC Ipswich's patrons, I did the only thing I could think. Like any homunculus who found himself without a job and indebted to someone or something (looking at you Azorious Senate), he was put to work. It began menial, helped Lisa and her lovely boss set up, placing cutlery and decorating tables. The menial task ran dry as both individuals realised a homunculus probably couldn't carry trays or walk around the floor when it was busy.  ...

Phyrexia All Will Be One - A summary of Mechanics and Archetypes

Once again I find myself in the position of watching everyone else have fun at Prerelease for the new set and this time I cannot put into words how disappointed I am to be unable to partake. Everyone who plays against me in MTG jokes that I'm "a Phyrexian Simp". To help you wrap your head around it and help with deck building for prerelease I have compiled the Mechanics and Archetypes into a single blog post you may scroll through to help. Mechanics Toxic Toxic is the new infect- applying Poison counters to an opponent when a creature with Toxic deals combat damage. The damage applied to an opponent’s life total is reduced with the combat damage and the number of Poison counters applied is determined by the number next to Toxic in that creature’s text box. Corrupted Corrupted is a new MTG mechanic in Phyrexia All Will Be One that adds value to Poison counters. Upon an opponent having 10 Poison counters, the game is ended. The Corrupted mechanic allows permanents to have...
