Dominaria United Story Speculation (SPOILERS)

 

It seems like the Magic the Gathering (MTG) community haven't finished processing the craziness that was Double Masters 2022, yet already within the past couple of weeks, they unveiled a lot of new information about the upcoming set that returns us to the plane of Magic's origin - Dominaria. Join me in this two-part blog post covering the first 30 years of magic and speculating the story accompanying the set release.

Dominaria United Story

There have not been many confirmed details about the set given that we haven't even commenced spoiler season. There have been marketing materials, products and a couple of cards to speculate over, outside of what WotC has confirmed.

What is confirmed?

Dominaria United is going to be showcasing a lot of the epic heroes and historic villains as was confirmed in the MTG 'Magic Showcase 2021'. We also know the set takes place on Dominaria as they prepare to face off against an enemy that is already on the plane and it's only a matter of time before conflict breaks out. 

WotC in their news blog confirmed that Dominaria is the start of "an epic story arch spanning four sets where the fate of Dominaria - and the Multiverse - is set to unravel". This is despite the fact that WotC previously confirmed they were getting rid of the 3-set block and 2-set blocks. The recent Innistrad double feature seemingly confirmed that players had grown tired of the blocks. Considering WotC release 4 core sets a year, this being a 4 set story with the first two sets being Dominaria United and The Brothers War respectively, it appears this story will serve as a refresher on the MTG Lore.

We also know that the silver golem Karn is playing a large role in this set. Karn being the only entity that can travel through time, I expect time travel shenanigans.

Spoilers

We have seen multiple characters on the marketing material making return. This includes braids who is long speculated to be dead after the Odyssey Block and Lilianna (not professor Onyx) after her character appeared to be happily retired. 

Amazon also had leaked some snippets from Decembers 'Magic the Gathering: The Visual Guide' - We have confirmation of the Raven Man's identity that has long been a question in the mtg lore since Origins for Lilianna. Confirmed in Dominaria United - the raven man is Lim-Dul from the Ice Age set, a long theorised reveal.

In addition, it has been spoiled that Ajani will become completed, joining Tamiyo as a Phyrexian planeswalker. Moreover, we have seen in the spoiled cards and marketing materials that Jaya, Ajani and Tefari are all key characters in the Dominaria united story. The same article in 'The Visual Guide' revealed that after his completion, Ajani kills Jaya. We have also seen in flavour text that Sheoldred is trying to conquer parts of Dominaria. 

The other card we have seen that ties to phyrexian is the sleeper agents.

Grab your tinfoil hats cause I am submitting the below into evidence.

Speculation - My theory on the story

Sheoldred is invading Dominaria using sleeper agents that are getting activated, secretly already having conquered most of Dominaria. Whilst on the surface continents are uniting to out the phyrexian sleeper agents, the battle is secretly already lost. Braids may be the new leader of the cabal and based on the artwork she may be a sleeper agent (look closely at her chest, it looks like etherium core). The main story will follow Ajani, Jaya and Tefari as they uncover a plot in present-day whilst Karn is looking to complete the work of Urza and stop the phyrexian threat before it even began back in Dominaria's past. 
When the plan goes wrong in the present day, Ajani and Tefari become completed and Jaya is killed. Karn is left with no option but to travel back in time to meet historic figures from Dominaria's past. This will lead to the fate of the brother's war potentially being altered in the future set. 

Lilianna could be brought into the fold by the Raven Man revealed to be Lim-Dul reigniting her thirst for vengeance and returning her to the main MTG Storyline. How Lim-Dul will interact with the story, I have few ideas but it would make sense he would want to rewrite history for his own means.

The website got a facelift

 It has been busy busy busy behind the scenes here at EPIC Ipswich over the past fortnight. Prep work for the Benevolent Owners shared vacation, juggling the change in the store's layout, new til systems, new television menus, and becoming increasingly popular. This isn't even factoring in the change in menu, or the upcoming events planned. We have been busy and you can trust I'll give you, loyal readers, a store update once we get time. In the meantime, our website has been updated by yours truly. When I first did the original website home page I had the essential elements, with a lot of my working hours, I've been making the website more streamlined and more friendly to our bandwidth. Please note, that the game pages are still to be updated to provide you more information about what we do here. In the mean time, anticipate big things on the horizon. I saw some streaming gear in the offices.... I suspect it will have something to do with videos on the social media end....

Star Wars Legion joins the Ipswich Tabletop Association

  Thursday nights at EPIC Ipswich are arguably the busiest in terms of customer and distribution. We house Yu-Gi-Oh!, Star Wars Legion, Magic the Gathering Modern, some private D&D Games and the Ipswich Tabletop Association (ITA). The later mostly specialising in Warhammer (40k, Age of Sigma and now Horus Heresy). After sharing space for ages, the ITA and Legion community have decided for mutual benefit in merging.  The ITA is a community and social group of Tabletop Wargamers that love Warhammer to the point they create their own terrain and purchase maps for their members to use. With the joining of Star Wars Legion, both groups can now share resources to the benefit of both communities.  On the surface to the general public, this shouldn't change much. Behind the scenes it makes managing the community of war gamers more streamlined for EPIC, reducing the amount of backwards and forwards to communicate to the separate communities.
