As mentioned in yesterday's post, parent company of Dungeons and Dragons and Magic the Gathering, Wizards of the Coast, broke the internet by revealing all their upcoming projects through 2023. The biggest news outside of the reprinting of 'The Legend of Drizzt' novels was the titles of their upcoming book releases and the Beta testing of their new D&D vision 'One D&D'. Heres everything we know about the in development One D&D.
One D&D
One D&D is a three stage release the first stage is a revising of the core 5th edition (5E) rules including the Player Handbook, Monster Manual & Dungeon Masters guide. These rules are all backwards compatible with current 5E rulesWhat does this look like? Monthly/Bimonthly releases of playtest material in Unearthed Arcana. The current version derives the Pathfinder second edition of the character creation. Players can make up their own background (no generic ones anymore) and races no longer have bonuses to stats but grant a lot more racial traits. Expect the Monster Manual to remove spellcasting and alignments (similar to Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse). As for the Dungeon Masters Guide, that is personally being overseen by Chris Perkins himself, not sure what to expect from this one but my hope is it is less magic items and more of a guide to homebrewing and campaign building.
The second stage has to do with D&D's recent acquisition of D&D Beyond, the popular internet version of portable character sheets and dice rolling. Both the D&D website and D&D Beyond site will be getting an extreme overhaul, whilst not alot has been revealed about this the one thing that has been is that purchasing physical copies of the books will give you access to all the digital copies on D&D Beyond.
The third and most focused stage of this 'One D&D' is the D&D virtual experience. One D&D will have it's own virtual tabletop like Roll20 or Foundry, unlike these online virtual tabletops, One D&D will have a literal 3d representation of a D&D battle map. This virtual tabletop, referred to as "D&D Digital" is in early development but will have customizable maps, miniatures and a 3D environment to fully immerse players. D&D Digitial will also have a tilt down available to fully bring the 3d environment to eye level or birdseye/tabletop down view.
