Dominaria United - A Summary of mechanics and archetypes

I cannot stress how excited I am for the Dominaria United set! I'm envious this is a prerelease I will regrettably not be partaking in on account of being the Tournament Organiser. In my enthusiasm, I am super excited to share with you the designed archetypes of dual-coloured decks in the newest Magic the Gathering set, as well as the returning and newest game mechanics. If you're planning on attending a prerelease, familiarising yourself with these will help give you the best advantage you could hope for when it comes to deck construction.

Mechanics

Returning mechanics from Kicker, to Sagas. Dominaria United has built upon some of the returning mechanics, added some new ones and has some sneaky hidden ones in the set design.

Kicker

We all know it and we all love it. Pump extra mana into a spell to do extra things. Dominaria United really adds the extra - in this set you'll be able to kick certain cards multiple times using two different colours of mana.

Sagas (now with Read Ahead)

Ever since sagas were introduced back in the original Dominaria set, becoming evergreen and a staple of many decks.
With Dominaria United, all sagas have a new mechanic called Read Ahead - a mechanic that lets you start your saga on any of the chapters, instead of having to go through them in order.

Domain

Another returning mechanic, cards with domain will have an ability that is dependant on the number of unique basic lands you have.

Enlist

One of the new mechanics of the set, enlist allows you to give an attacking creature a temporary buff by tapping a (non-summoning sick) creature you control. This adds the tapped creature's power to the attacking one's.

Stun Counters

The almighty sticky tap. If a permanent (note not specifically a creature) has a stun counter and would become untapped, remove one stun counter from it instead, leaving it tapped.

And now for a hidden mechanic Legendary Matters
In this set, legendary creatures booster other legendary creatures and legendary creatures have more effects that target them. Just don't forget the legendary rule when planning your deck or worse still playing it.

Archetypes

Taking a step back from the tri-coloured archetypes of Streets of New Capenna, the two colour archetypes return enabling players more versatility when deck constructing by merging two archetypes for a tri-coloured deck or just playing it simple with your dual-coloured.

Azorius (Blue/White): Fliers Tempo

Hold your ground with tokens and defensive instants and sorceries, all while attacking with fliers.

Dimir (Blue/Black): Control

Develop a long-term advantage with card draw and creature removal spells, then go after your opponent directly in the late game.

Rakdos (Black/Red): Reckless Aggro

Throw caution to the wind and assault your opponent, clearing the path with creature removal spells or by simply trading your creatures with theirs.

Gruul (Red/Green): Domain Stompy

Rule the board by attacking with the largest creatures on the battlefield, boosted by the domain mechanic.

Selesnya (Green/White): Domain Tokens

Assemble a massive army of creatures and tokens, then dominate the mid-game with the domain mechanic.

Orzhov (Black/White): Creature Sacrifice

Ruthlessly sacrifice your small creatures or tokens for profit, then bring creatures back from the graveyard to overwhelm your opponent.

Izzet (Blue/Red): Spells Aggro

Cast instant and Sorcery spells to bolster aggressive creatures and clear a path to victory.

Golgari (Green/Black): Domain Midrange

Get maximum value out of your cards with huge creatures, bringing cards back from the graveyard, and domain rewards.

Boros (Red/White): Tokens Aggro

Go wide with an aggressive army of small creatures and tokens, punching through your opponenet's defenses with spells and effects that boost your whole team.

Simic (Blue/Green): Kicker Ramp

Build up your mana to get additional value from kicking your spells. Splash in some other colours to take advantage of powerful multicolour cards and the domain mechanic.

That's it, you're all set to play in your prerelease! EPIC Ipswich is running their sealed prerelease Friday the 2nd of September at 6PM and is running their jumpstart prerelease on the 3rd of September at 12PM.

The website got a facelift

It has been busy busy busy behind the scenes here at EPIC Ipswich over the past fortnight. Prep work for the Benevolent Owners shared vacation, juggling the change in the store's layout, new til systems, new television menus, and becoming increasingly popular. This isn't even factoring in the change in menu, or the upcoming events planned. We have been busy and you can trust I'll give you, loyal readers, a store update once we get time. In the meantime, our website has been updated by yours truly. When I first did the original website home page I had the essential elements, with a lot of my working hours, I've been making the website more streamlined and more friendly to our bandwidth. Please note, that the game pages are still to be updated to provide you more information about what we do here. In the mean time, anticipate big things on the horizon. I saw some streaming gear in the offices.... I suspect it will have something to do with videos on the social media end....

What is Adventurers League?

Adventurers League is a standardised and regulated form of Dungeons & Dragons . It uses the rules as written in the official D&D books, so you don't need to worry about any homebrew rules. Character creation is limited to the Players Handbook and one other source, which means you don't have to worry about anyone making characters that are too game-breaking, as well as all the possible worlds you can end up in are all published D&D settings  To put it simply, Adventurers League takes all of the guesswork out of D&D. The stories are already written, the rules are plainly outlined, and everything is structured. So it is a great place to learn as a player and even as a Game Master  Each session is a short self-contained 2-4 hour story, though some will make callbacks to other stories you won't miss much if you can only come in once a fortnight instead of every week, unlike other games where it always feels like when you miss one session you end up missing ...
